Freak is Dead but Geek's Still Here

It feels as if it was just yesterday my best friend and I had dreams of ruthlessly spending money on costumes that bore resemblance to shinigami robes and wearing wigs the color of apples or grapes, or maybe even apples and grapes blended together. We had our plans laid down to the tiniest and most embarrassing detail-- including our setting, the characters we were going to portray and whose deviantArt account would take all the credit. We were so young and optimistic. We were cosplayer-wannabes!

I still think Jin Joson is the ultimate cosplayer.
She's a talented photographer too!

Of course there isn't anything wrong if you have somehow cracked your cranium and decided to visit online stores that sell hair that isn't made of keratin and costumes that make you look like you're on crack. I fully respect cosplayers' passion and drive to express their love for kickass anime characters like Hitsugaya and Mirmo de Pon. The only thing is, cosplaying is quite unusual here in the Philippines, particularly in Iloilo City. I was at a mall earlier and lo, a cosplay convention was being held at the activity center. You can just imagine the crowd those cosplayers attracted. I couldn't believe it. As far as I am concerned, the people living in Iloilo don't care about the amount of entertainment anime brings the younger generation. But, hey, add living, breathing kids into the equation and that's wicked entertainment already.

I didn't watch the show because I thought it would only bring me back to my bizarre child fantasies. I'm already aberrant as is.

PS. I maintain my respect towards Jin Joson. She is a brilliant artist and a student of the University of the Philippines to boot!
