I'm In

The poster rocks.

I downloaded Let Me In on a whim because I found the theatrical poster "featured" in one of my friend's albums in Facebook. It seemed interesting so I immediately went to a torrent site and waited four hours for the download to finish. I didn't bother to watch the trailer; actually, I'm watching it now, after the movie. Something's wrong with me.

Let Me In is a 2010 horror-romance film directed by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield), and starring Kodi Smit-McPhee and Chloe Moretz. It is set in 1983, in a small town in New Mexico where twelve-year-old Owen (Smit-McPhee) lives with his soon-to-be divorced mother (Cara Buono). One night, a girl around his age moves in with a person he assumes to be her father (Richard Jenkins). Owen is a bullied kid and because of his parents' ongoing divorce, he is often neglected. Being alienated by both his classmates and parents, he befriends his new neighbor Abby (Moretz), who happens to be a vampire apparently not related to the Cullens because of her gross meal etiquette issues.

(Cue in sinister music) And a dark romance begins...

The film is a bit slow-paced because it focuses more on the two kids' friendship rather than on the horror itself. You might have the idea that, since contemporary culture cultivates it, vampires always look breathtaking even while feeding on human carcasses. This is not the case in Let Me In, though. Abby looks more like Sadako's well sister than Victoria on the prowl, only she is usually covered in blood, not water. She doesn't sparkle under the light of the sun-- she bursts into flames.

Let Me In isn't as challengingly scary as psychological horror films but it has a nice story to it. It has the weird combination of platonic and sweet child romance, and gore; much like Romeo and Juliet and Saw blended in a juicer. It sounds disgusting but it sort of works. I can safely conclude that it is a good horror-romance film and definitely worth four hours of downloading and two hours of damaging your eyes.
