Guess What - Iloilo is Evolving

Evolving in a "We actually know how to dress up now" sense. This week, a series of fashion shows featuring the works of both the senior and the young designers of Iloilo is being held at SM City Mandurriao, where people are finally being injected the artsy gene which has, somehow, always been missing from the general populace. (I kid.)

One of the organizations I joined in the university, UP Modus, was "hired" to do publicity work (videos and posters), so I received a very handy all-access pass. I use the term hire loosely because in actuality we won't be receiving payment, but they give us free stuff so it's quite peaceful backstage. Also, I will not disclose what we do during the event itself because it's not very interesting (a shocker!) so I will focus on the shows:

In case you are uncaring enough not to notice the posters hung all over Diversion Road and Gen. Luna street, here is a video of the event, which includes the schedule of shows and the list of sponsors:

When I say there are enough talented people in the organization to last the apocalypse, I exaggerate only very slightly.

The most notable trends for S/S 2013? Very detailed embroidery, sheer fabrics, and Baroque-esque prints (for men's wear, especially), and asymmetrical cuts. Although not all of the designs had a soft spot for my taste, I believe every designer who has shown his or her work so far is very talented. I haven't seen a collection I would strictly point out as avant-garde but here are the designers that gave me mini-heart attacks during their shows:

Day 1

  • John Montinola - Would it be safe to say that John Montinola's designs remind of McQueen's? I do not mean this in the wrong way. His dresses are enchanting: an interesting play of nude colors with an overall concept reminiscent of regality.
  • Djohn Clement - If there's something he's really good at, it would be mixing black and gold. His designs are - how do I say this? - electrifying.
  • Sidney Eculla - His work is a cross between elegant and geometrical. It might not be as appealing to the more "rebellious" crowd, but I think the way he combines suits with his gowns is both risky and intriguing, which is a good thing when you're in the fashion industry.
Day 2

  • Dauson Bermtay - I love the fabric he used for the suits, period.
  • Edgar Jaranilla - His evening dresses had us going from "Oh, my god," to "How the hell does he come up with those ideas?!"
The finale for Edgar Jaranilla's show - supermodel Ria Bolivar!
  • Doddie Vril Tan - Very promising. His work is done as meticulously as any professional's is. The pleating is just phenomenal.

Pleats, ruffles, more pleats - oh, and Ria!
  • Totong Gellangarin - I've never seen bead work as amazing as his is!
Kick off -
- and the finale.

By the way, you will be surprised at how many intimidating fashion bloggers exist in Iloilo City. Who knew?
