Bluqube's Sneaker Summer Slam: Brilliant Kickoff

April 27, 2013 - One of the fresher media powerhouses, Bluqube Inc., held the first sneaker convention in Iloilo City, Sneaker Summer Slam 2013, at Robinson's Place Iloilo.

Bluqube's creative director is one of the founders of Modus. Lucky break!

The event featured a number of interesting activities: an NBA 2K13 tournament, a slam dunk contest, a killer crossover competition, and even a sneaker design contest, all of which celebrated the growth of sneaker culture here in the city. In one side of the fountain, sneaker enthusiasts from different parts of the country were able to buy, sell, and trade parts of their collections. Booths were also put up for action figure mongers (Iloilo Comic Con was a sponsor) and t-shirt designers (HappyWeed, etc.) to show off their merch.

The whole-day event concluded in a ramp show that showcased the sneakers. The show was produced by UP Modus, a fashion-oriented student organization in the University of the Philippines in the Visayas. (Direction and styling for men by Earl Valdehuesa, styling for women by Anika Tirador and me, and makeup by Geeza Vicencio. Also, special thanks to Karla Magsipoc for covering for the org!)

With the success of this event, Iloilo is hoping for a bigger and much noisier sneaker convention next year. Kudos to Bluqube!

To be honest, this was a hard undertaking for us (the org), especially because we were not able to send out sponsorship requests for clothes from the IYDG. We had to raid our own closets (thanks to Nikki Quitasol for the help!) and deconstruct some old shirts. Fortunately, the models did a good job just pulling it all off, so we ended up safe in the end.
