The Oscars, Hugo, more Hugo and a Handful of The Artist

I don't have classes today (hoo-ray). There will be a grand rally for the CAS-USC elections later but I'm more art-appreciative than political, so right now I'm sitting in front of the telly viciously yelling "And the Oscar goes to" with the presentors.

The winners:

Cinematography, Art Direction, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, and Visual Effects: Hugo

Wow. Four awards and... Growing?

Costume Design and Original Score: The Artist

In all fairness and justice, Mark Bridges pulled the costumes off in black and white!

Makeup: The Iron Lady

Mark Coulier and J. Roy Helland beat the team that worked on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2. I was honestly expecting the latter would win.

Foreign Language Film: A Separation (Iran)

Documentary Feature: Undefeated

Gasp, American football! Sports! I have a feeling I wouldn't be able to relate with the ideologies of the movie.

Animated Feature: Rango

Supporting Actress: Octavia Spencer (The Help)

I feel very happy for Ms. Spencer. When she received the award she was very emotional (then again, who wouldn't be? This is her first Oscar.) I have yet to watch The Help so I couldn't fully express my support.

Supporting Actor: Christopher Plummer (Beginners)

Mr. Plummer proves that age is not a hindrance to winning heavy trophies! You go, Lolo Chris!

Film Editing: The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

I wrote a post about this movie a two years ago and guess what? I still haven't watched it yet!

Original Song: The Muppets

Check out Bret McKenzie's Man or Muppet:

Short Film (Live Action): The Shore

Short Film (Animated): The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore

Flying books? Really? And the name is too much of an oxymoron.

Documentary Feature: Saving Face

I want to watch this one! We actually discussed throwing acid in my Understanding Gender class and it's very heartbreaking.

Writing (Adapted Screenplay): The Descendants

Writing (Original Screenplay): Midnight in Paris

Kudos to Woody Allen! Midnight in Paris is one of my favorites. I was already rooting for this film two minutes into it!

Best Actor: Jean Duhardin (The Artist)

Best Actress: Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady)

So taray! I love Meryl Streep. She's amazingly versatile! Nothing less can be expected.

Director: Michel Hazanivicius (The Artist)

He beat Scorsese and Allen but I was kind of expecting The Artist to fly away with the major awards. Silent films are still the bomb, huh?

(I have a question, though. Is it mandatory for these hotshot directors to wear thick-framed glasses?! Look at them. They're so pseudo-hispter.)

Best Picture: The Artist

Dun dun dun duuuun! The biggest of the biggest awards!

All right, fine. It's you already, Michel Hazanivicius. I promise I'll put this film in my to-watch list.
