I've been surfing the web for updates on the Hunger Games movie (dammit Lionsgate, please move faster...) and have come across a number of fansites and forums that have polls on which actress would be perfect for Katniss Everdeen. I still stand with my belief that casting an unknown, or holding auditions for suitable hopefuls, is the better choice. I just noticed that once you cast an actress who has already made a name for herself, the movie tends to...well, disappoint. Point in case, the polls for Katniss give a solid holler: Malese Jow as Katniss Everdeen. Rumors are going around that scripts are already being distributed to possible actresses, but Malese Jow says she hasn't received a copy yet.
What do you think? Can she kill kids in the arena and still manage to look sexy?

Malese Jow |
She looks the part. No news on Peeta or Gale?
ReplyDeletepeeta: Hunter Parrish (the voters are screwed)
ReplyDeleteGale: Gaspard Ulliel (again...why?!)
btw, Lionsgate is finalizing the director deal thing with Gary Ross...looked him up, he's been nominated for 3 Oscars but hasn't won any...I hope he'll do a great job with the movie
Malese has the talent, the looks and she can sing. She can definitely pull this one off.
ReplyDeleteI'm totally against casting complete unknowns for a movie of this magnitude. The cast should at least have a little experience, of which Malese has just the right amount for my taste. She has been in a few teen TV shows, a few teen movies, just recently TVD as a guest star for eleven episodes and a couple of small roles in a couple of small to medium budget movies. For me that's just perfect for finally getting a shot at a larger budget movie like "The Hunger Games" and a lead role.
Also you shouldn't forget that this movie is going to be international. And just because Malese is known in the US and some other English speaking countries where those TV shows actually aired in which she appeared, that doesn't mean she is known everywhere else. When you go over to Europe and ask around if they know who Malese Jow is, you will get a "What? Who the is that? Never heard of her." in return. And that not only from older folks, but younger ones as well. So that goes for most of the population in non English speaking countries. Of course she has fans there too, especially since her guest appearance on "The Vampire Diaries". For us over here, I am from Germany by the way, she is a little bit known let's say. But she has the potential and talent and that's what most of her fans and supporters think. That's why we spread the word for Malese and try to get as many of Malese's fans and other people to support #MaleseForKatniss or just MaleseForKatniss if you will.
I have just recently seen a thread on the mockingjay.net forums that had a lot of accusations from, I think, Kaya fans against Malese and her fans. Calling Malese desperate, untalented and accusing her of spamming links to polls and #MaleseForKatniss tags on Twitter and Facebook? Really? Pleeease... the only time she ever mentioned MaleseForKatniss was in an interview with MTV Hollywood Crush and that's it. And calling her fans cheaters and hackers, because we have supposedly rigged every poll out there. Yeah, right... -.- No, we just work together. When our fan page posts a link to a poll or article to Malese's fan, then we tag all other fan pages that are about Malese and keep cross-side posting this way. So you can reach like 10-20k fans with one post and that just on Facebook. We also tweet Malese's followers on Twitter and inform them. But there is no cheating going on anywhere. We even spent our own hard earned money on advertising and other things like prizes for contests. We just take it serious and don't just send out a post every 2 weeks or so. This could be the next big step for Malese and that's what we want and support. She now stands at the 50% mark and we want to push her over there and make her internationally well known... That's all.
I don't get all those haters. On both sides, I might add. Stop with the fighting already and support your favorite actress for this role.
But in the end the casting directors will have the last word. And there is nothing you can do to change that. Well, maybe you could bribe them, I dunno. ;) :p j/k
Wow. I just realized that's a lot of text. I'm sorry. I just found your post through google and thought I'll just quickly write what's on my mind. Sorry. :)

This picture tells me she can play Katniss just fine (as well as her role on TVD): http://i54.tinypic.com/14mq5wi.jpg
ReplyDeleteEverything I want to say about Malese Jow has already been said by Andreas and Munky so I'll just point out that Katniss isn't supposed to be sexy. This isn't about exploiting 16-year-old's and portraying them as looking like 25-year-old celebrities. It's so much bigger than that. Plus, Malese Jow has all the looks and talent for the part so why shouldn't she get it?
Like she said, "Slap on some gray contacts" and she's good to go.

ReplyDeleteJamie and Andreas-
ReplyDeleteThanks for reading, first of all. I (really) appreciate you sharing your opinions. Personally, I like Malese too, and I'm not doubting her acting skills in any way. Let's just hope the auditions go well and the casting team does a good job.
